The Big Bloody Slime Experiment

Everything you need to know

Step one in the Big Bloody Slime Experiment is to register your school on the main page.

This helps us keep track of how many students are involved,
and to send you any updates/results.

Below are all the resources (videos and pdfs) ready to go.

How it all works

The Big Bloody Slime Experiment is a fun way to find out about blood and all of the useful things that make it up. As the name suggests, it is also about making a slime or two (as models of blood). The science behind it all is a mixture of what is in blood and what it does, as well as a bit of fun discovering the strange nature of slimes and actual slimes out there in nature.
All the instructions needed are in the videos and pdf’s below. The videos are designed to be shown to the class as a whole, and there are introduction and wrap up videos to bookend it all.
Making the slime is a fairly quick activity and several slightly different batches can be made within the class if you’d like to move onto the “testing of slime” stage. Making slightly different slimes and testing them is a great link to experimenting, and can involve some predicting, changing a variable, measuring and writing down the results. And that makes it great science, not just getting messy with slime.

Care to Share?

We’d love you to share you bloody slime experience with us, and the world (if you can). Images, short clips, whatever tells the story best. If you’re keen to share content on your channels, please tag us @lifebloodau and include our hashtag #lifebloodau, so we can find it and re-share. And don’t forget……
There is a signed swim cap from Lifeblood ambassador and Olympic gold medalist Michael Klim to go to one of the great sharers.

Introduction

This is all about blood, the many places it goes in the body and why make a slime model of it.

Making Slime

How to make the bloody slime, what the components are and some interesting facts along the way.

Testing Slime

Turn the making of slime/blood into a science experiment with some testing. There are several ways to do it and all pretty simple. Viscosity is a strange beast, like slime.

Wrap up

Find out what those blood parts do, how blood is donated as well as a whole heap about the wonderful world of slimes out there in nature.

Teacher Tips

Just for the teacher, some tips on making slime, turning it all into a class activity and good science in the simplest, cleanest way.

And special thanks to…

National Science Week

Prime time of the year for Science around Australia. Pretty much everyone is doing something, and many carry the curiosity they then develop throughout their lives.

Red Blood Cells

Red blood cells may be the best known bits of the blood (and shaped like cushions), but what about white blood cells, platelets or even plasma? It is a magnificent mix of life saving stuff that we carry around all through our bodies.

The Big Bloody Slime Experiment is being run by Dr Rob and Experimentary, because we love science (you’re welcome).
