We thought we’d take a look at some of the weird and wacky inventions that demonstrate the very heart of experimenting – testing something to see if it works, and figuring out what to do if it doesn’t!
The Moustache Shield
I’m sure you’ve wondered how to keep your moustache out of the way when you are trying to eat or drink?
The Baby Carrier
This invention won’t be making it through any Australian safety standard reviews, but I guess if you need to go for a skate then it you’ve got to do something with your baby!
Problem solved through this great invention (not sure what you do if one of you isn’t too great at skating…) Question for the kids – can you think of another invention that would solve this problem?
The Group Shaving Machine
This is a 19th-century contraption that allows up to a dozen men to be shaved at once! How efficient!
It doesn’t take too much to spot some potential hazards with this machine, equipped with a dozen knives, right near your face. But the main reason it didn’t take off is that there was no way to adjust the knives based on face shape or body height, so one bloke could lose an eyebrow and the other an ear, just by not quite sitting just so.
This is one invention that perhaps could be worked on with current technology – technology that accurately maps the user’s face first (you’ve still got to sit still though!)
